ELKRIDGE, MD – A train carrying plastic pellets derailed inside the Patapsco Valley State Park’s Avalon Area.
At approximately 10:45 AM, units from Howard, Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties, as well as Baltimore City were dispatched to a report of a train derailment in the Elkridge area. Units arrived in the area and began to search for the train, which was eventually located near the swinging bridge in the Avalon area of the Patapsco Valley State Park.
Several of the cars, at least one of which was carrying plastic pellets, derailed and spilled the pellets onto the ground; other cars carrying scrap aluminum also derailed. However, no other leaks or hazards were reported.
Howard County firefighters established a unified command with other responders, as well as with CSX railroad and Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
