In the interest of transparency, I wanted to take a few minutes to make a full disclosure about the site and my association with the Howard County, MD, Department of Fire & Rescue Services.
When I first began the site, I was not associated with the Department, and began it for two reasons – first, I felt the Department was not being recognized (at least as much as I felt it deserved) for all its great work, but also as a means for me to exercise what I’ve been learning about in terms of public information, crisis communications and social media for emergency management.
As time has progressed, I have begun working for the Department under the public information officer; my duties primarily include working on the Department’s intranet, photography and graphic design, as needed.
However, I must emphasize that this site, and all of its associated spokes in the social media hub, remain unofficial – I don’t work on the site on County time, nor do I receive any additional compensation or special treatment for my work on the site.
The time and resources I use on this site are mine and/or publicly available, such as a news release sent to interested parties.
In closing, I want to thank all of you for your ongoing support, and welcome any feedback you care to share. Please feel free to contact me for any reason – I welcome any questions, comments or suggestions.
Doug Walton
